The Area

The village of Sixt Fer à Cheval is approximately 1km from the chalet – an easy walk to a beautiful unspoilt village. With an ancient Abbey, bubbling river, two good restaurants, two bars, ski hire, tourist office, a small supermarket, boulangerie and some gift shops, you may find everything you need for your stay in this wonderful village. Visit the Sixt Fer à Cheval tourism web site (in English).

Sixt is classified amongst the most beautiful villages in France, and from here visitors can enjoy the largest Natural Reserve of Haute-Savoie. A few kilometres from Sixt is the spectacular Cirque de Sixt Fer à Cheval – a series of spectacular waterfalls in a horseshoe valley which is designated as one of 34 Grand Sites De France.

Also in Sixt towards the hamlet of Salvagny (where our chalet is found) is the Cascade De Rouget. Also known as the “Queen of the Alps”, the Cascade de Rouget is the most impressive of the waterfalls around Sixt. The two sections form a total height of over eighty metres.

Just four kilometres from Sixt is the larger village of Samoëns. Samoëns is an equally unspoilt with a good number of restaurants bars and a larger supermarket. In the town square is a four hundred year old lime tree (known as Gros Tilleul), with a stone fountain – a relic of the stonecutters from which the town takes its name, and skirting the town square are a number of outdoor cafes to take in the scenery. A web site for Samoëns (in English) shows you all the local hightlights.
